While many people travel to immerse themselves in different cultures, seek heart-pounding adventures, or network with new acquaintances, others journey specifically to encounter charming wildlife. The setting here is notably more scenic than the city-based centers, featuring two deep gorges that offer stunning views of the waterfalls and valleys that represent the natural ancestral home of the species.
5. Dujiangyan Panda Center, China
For travelers seeking a more intimate experience with fewer crowds, this base is the ideal choice. Because it sees a lower volume of tourists compared to Bifengxia or the Chengdu center, volunteers and guests often enjoy significantly more time near the animals. Some tour operators provide full-day volunteer packages where participants can help track behavior, tidy the habitats, and assist keepers with food preparation.
6. Zoo Atlanta, Georgia
The birth of panda twins to resident female Lun Lun in 2013 was a historic event, as twin births are an extraordinary rarity for the species. The siblings, named Mei Lun and Mei Huan, were recently moved to their own shared habitat featuring both interior rooms and an open-air playground. They are typically visible to the public until mid-afternoon, so early arrivals are recommended for those wanting to see them in action.
7. Toronto Zoo, Canada
In mid-October 2015, the Toronto Zoo celebrated the arrival of two newborn cubs.
