At a Glance
Originally imported from Europe for decorative purposes in parks and estates, the mute swan now lives wild in many parts of North America, especially in the northeast. It has become so common in certain areas that people sometimes regard it as a nuisance. Despite its name, the mute swan isn’t completely silent — its calls are hushed and less loud than many native swan species, though its wingbeats can be heard from far away.
Habitat
Mute swans inhabit a variety of wetland environments: both freshwater and saltwater ponds, coastal lagoons, bays, marshes, lakes, and park ponds. They are often found near human developments but are also present in some more remote areas.
Description & Identification
Size: Very large — measuring about 58–60 inches (1.47–1.52 meters) in length, with a wingspan reaching up to about 7 feet 11 inches (2.4 meters).
Appearance: Adults have noticeably all-white plumage. Their bills are orange with a raised black knob near the base. When swimming, they often arch their neck in a graceful S-shape and sometimes carry their wings slightly raised over their back. Juveniles are duller in color — usually brownish-gray — with grey bills.
Behavior & Calls
Although dubbed “mute,” this swan uses hissing, barking, and occasionally loud trumpeting calls. In flight, the swan’s wings produce a distinctive whirring sound.
Diet & Feeding
Mute swans feed by dabbling — dipping their heads and necks into the water — or by upending themselves with their tail up and head down. They also graze on land. Their diet consists mainly of plant matter: aquatic vegetation like pondweeds, eelgrass, and algae; on land they’ll eat grasses and sometimes consume waste grain. Occasionally, they’ll also eat small animals like insects, snails, worms, tadpoles, or even small fish.
Reproduction & Nesting
Pairing & Breeding Age: Swans generally form pairs by about age two, but their first nesting usually happens when they’re 3-4 years old.
Courtship & Nest Defense: Courtship includes facing each other and simultaneously turning heads from side to side. For defense of their nesting territory, a swan may arch its wings over its back, lay its head far down and back, fluff its neck feathers, and swim forward in jerky motions.
Nest: The nest is built near water — on the shoreline, small islands, or mounds in shallow water. The nest is a mound of plant material (usually 5-6 feet in diameter) with a shallow depression on top. While the female leads nest construction, the male helps gather materials.
Eggs & Young: A clutch usually contains 5-7 eggs (sometimes up to 10 or rarely 11), which are very pale green and get stained by the nest. Incubation lasts about 36 days, mostly done by the female with the male sharing shifts when the female leaves to feed. Both parents care for the young, and small cygnets may even ride on their parents’ backs. Young birds fledge around 4-5 months, and often stay with their parents through their first winter.
Range & Movement
In North America, many mute swans are nonmigratory, though those in the northeast may move south or to coastal regions when inland waters freeze. In their native Eurasian range, some populations make longer migrations.
Conservation & Impact
Status: Classified as Least Concern by the IUCN.
Population: Numbers are growing in many parts of North America. Their large size and heavy consumption of aquatic plants sometimes lead to conflicts with native waterfowl and habitat management, especially in sensitive regions like Chesapeake Bay and New England, where some have proposed population control measures.
