The intimate link between sculptural art and human society can be traced back to the civilizations of ancient Greece and Rome.
Throughout history, sculptures were crafted to pay tribute to deities, celebrate rulers, and depict mythological narratives. Legendary stories like those of Pygmalion or Deucalion and Pyrrha often featured sculptural symbolism.
At Kuadros, we aim to celebrate this enduring connection by selecting what we consider to be the ten most breathtaking sculptures ever made.
1. Venus of Willendorf (circa 28,000–25,000 BCE)
Discovered in 1908 near Willendorf, Austria, this prehistoric figurine—carved from limestone and coated with red ochre—is one of the oldest known representations of the human form. Just over 11 cm tall, this Paleolithic artifact may have been sculpted by a woman depicting herself. Despite its size, it remains the most iconic figure from the Stone Age.
2. Bust of Nefertiti (1345 BCE)
This renowned portrait of Queen Nefertiti, whose name means “a beautiful woman has come,” was unearthed in 1912 in the ruins of Amarna, Egypt. Although lacking inscriptions, her tall, unique crown makes her identity unmistakable. The bust has become a lasting icon of grace, and debates over its rightful ownership have stirred diplomatic tension between Egypt and Germany for over a century.
3. The Terracotta Warriors (210–209 BCE)
Arguably one of the most significant archaeological finds of all time, this army of clay soldiers was interred near the burial site of Qin Shi Huang, China’s first emperor. The life-sized figures—numbering over 8,000—were intended to accompany and defend the emperor in the afterlife. Along with warriors, over 130 chariots and hundreds of horses were also buried, all constructed with remarkable detail and variation in size and posture.
4. The Great Sphinx of Giza (approx. 7000 BCE)
Carved from a single stretch of limestone, this colossal creature merges a lion's body with a human face. Measuring about 73 meters in length and 20 meters in height, the Sphinx is one of the world's largest and oldest monuments. Traces of pigment suggest it was once vividly painted. Recent theories suggest it may predate ancient Egyptian dynasties, pointing to a lost, advanced culture.
5. Venus de Milo (130–100 BCE)
Uncovered on the island of Milos in 1820, this captivating figure, thought to represent Aphrodite, was gifted to the Louvre by King Louis XVIII. Despite missing arms and attributes, her elegance and ambiguity have only enhanced her allure. Believed to have been sculpted by Alexandros of Antioch, the inscription that confirmed his authorship has long been lost.
6. The Pietà by Michelangelo (1499 CE)
Commissioned for the tomb of a French cardinal, this emotional marble depiction of Mary holding the lifeless body of Jesus was Michelangelo’s earliest major masterpiece. He later said the marble block was the finest he had ever used. Today housed in St. Peter’s Basilica, the sculpture is considered by many to surpass even his later works. A faint signature—an “M”—was found hidden on Mary’s palm.
7. Laocoön and His Sons (2nd century BCE)
This dramatic scene portrays the Trojan priest Laocoön and his two sons being crushed by sea serpents. According to myth, he warned his fellow citizens against accepting the Greeks’ wooden horse. As punishment from the gods—Athena, Poseidon, or Apollo, depending on the version—he and his children were attacked by giant snakes. This iconic sculpture is now displayed in the Vatican Museums.
8. Michelangelo’s David (1501–1504 CE)
A symbol of youthful strength and divine favor, David is portrayed moments before confronting Goliath. Michelangelo chose to exaggerate the hands and head to correct the perspective from below, as the statue was intended for a high perch on Florence Cathedral. However, it was instead placed in the open air due to its astonishing craftsmanship. Today, it can be admired at Florence's Galleria dell'Accademia.
9. Perseus with the Head of Medusa by Antonio Canova (1804–1806 CE)
Canova created two versions of this neoclassical marvel, one housed in the Vatican and a replica at New York’s Metropolitan Museum. The sculpture shows Perseus triumphant, lifting the severed head of Medusa. According to legend, he used a polished shield from Athena to avoid her deadly gaze. Upon returning, Perseus turned King Polydectes to stone in revenge for mistreating his mother.
10. The Ecstasy of Saint Teresa by Gian Lorenzo Bernini (1647–1652 CE)
This theatrical marble piece illustrates a mystical vision described by Saint Teresa of Ávila, where an angel pierces her heart with a golden spear. Blending spiritual fervor with sensual expression, the work is considered Bernini’s crowning achievement. The angel's gaze and the saint’s expression capture a moment of divine rapture, making it a cornerstone of Baroque sculpture.
