Witnessing the sunset from the pinnacle of a temple is an absolute must when exploring the mesmerizing realm of Bagan. As the sun descends behind the mountainous horizon and the meandering Irrawaddy River, you have the choice of positioning yourself strategically. You can opt for a view where the iconic stupas cast captivating black silhouettes against the twilight, or you can position the sun behind you, illuminating the pagodas in a palette of pink and gold. Bagan boasts an array of temples from which to choose for your sunset spectacle. While Ananda and Shwesandaw are among the most favored, they often teem with crowds as most tour groups gravitate towards these vantage points for the breathtaking Bagan sunset.
In our quest for a more intimate experience, we set our sights eastward, specifically on Pyathadar Temple, a recommendation we received from our pilot during the sunrise balloon flight over Bagan earlier that day. Situated on the far eastern fringes of the archaeological wonderland, this temple boasts an open terrace with ample space for sunset enthusiasts. Unlike some of the narrower, more congested alternatives, Pyathadar Temple offers a serene setting. Arriving approximately an hour before sunset, we had the entire temple to ourselves.
The ascent to the pagoda summits is not for the faint-hearted. The staircases are narrow and dimly lit, if lit at all. They also boast a steep incline, though the view that unfolds before you justifies the heart-pounding climb.
Following a 3 AM wake-up call for our hot air balloon adventure and a day of exploring Bagan on e-bikes, it was a welcome respite to sit on the terrace, our bare feet dangling over the edge (as shoes and socks are not permitted inside the temples), while taking in the breathtaking panorama of the stupa-studded landscape.
The experience was surreal. During our e-bike exploration of the archaeological site, we rarely encountered another soul. Sandy paths stretched before us, entirely devoid of fellow travelers. Yet, as we patiently awaited the sun's descent, it was as if the entirety of Bagan was converging upon Pyathadar Temple.
The scene unfolded in a rather comical fashion, one I wish we had captured on video. First, herdsmen guiding their goats and cows arrived, shepherding their flocks in for the night. Soon, a procession of coaches and private vehicles effortlessly transported tourists to our location. Not to be forgotten were the horse-drawn carts, which remain a popular mode of transportation within the area. Tim and I found ourselves in fits of laughter as a wayward cow, stressed by the commotion, broke free from the herd, prompting a Burmese woman to chase after her errant bovine companion.
However, even as individuals gathered on the terrace with us, it never felt crowded. Regardless of language barriers or diverse backgrounds, we were all about to share in one of the most awe-inspiring spectacles we'd ever encountered.
A hushed silence enveloped us as the setting sun bathed the sky in brilliant shades of gold, rendering the pagodas as striking black silhouettes. The mist emanating from the Irrawaddy River contributed to the overall mystique of the scene.
As the sun dipped below the mountainous expanse, the landscape transformed entirely. The sky evolved into a living canvas, painted with streaks of pink, orange, and purple. It appeared as though the heavens were changing with each passing minute, and we were reluctant to tear our gaze away. The temple's key holder eventually shepherded us towards the exit, and we were among the very last to depart.
