A Misleading Name
Contrary to what its common name suggests, the waterbuck is not an aquatic creature. While it is regularly sighted near rivers and lakes and will readily enter water to evade predators, it is the member of its genus that spends the least amount of time in wetlands, frequently foraging into drier woodlands.
Sedentary by Nature
These antelope are creatures of habit. Waterbucks do not undertake migrations or long-distance travels, with males typically maintaining the same territories throughout the entire year. Uniquely, a male waterbuck does not mark his territory with dung or urine; his physical presence and personal scent are considered adequate marking.
Blurred Species Lines
In areas where the defassa and common waterbuck have adjacent ranges, interbreeding is a regular occurrence. This has led a portion of the scientific community to classify the two groups as a single species, contrary to the more common classification of two distinct species.
A Young Male's Journey
Between 7 and 9 months of age, young males are expelled from their maternal groups and integrate into bachelor herds. Within these groups, a clear social structure emerges, dictated by size and physical power, leading to frequent competitive clashes. By the age of 6 or 7, males establish their own territories.
The Constant Battle for Territory
A mature male defends his domain against rivals through aggressive posturing and direct combat. Although these territories are held year-round, a male is typically displaced by a stronger challenger before he reaches 10 years of age.
An Ecological Niche Under Threat
The waterbuck's survival is intrinsically linked to reed beds and shrubs in wetland areas for foraging. Consequently, water development initiatives—including dam construction and river diversion for hydropower—pose a significant threat to their habitat in certain regions.
A Shrinking World
Their grassland environment is progressively being reduced and fragmented due to conversion for agricultural purposes, further pressuring their populations.
The Hunter's Target and the Ecosystem's Pillar
Most waterbuck species have faced population declines from unregulated hunting. Ecologically, they are vital to their habitats as grazers and browsers, and they serve as a key prey species for major carnivores including lions, leopards, wild dogs, and spotted hyenas.
